ABLE

A re-design for the modern stainless steel waterbottle.

MEET NIMA

Problem

Because Nima is always moving, she likes to pack as light as she can. She is in need of a durable water bottle that fits her mobile lifestyle and won’t take up too much space.

Solution

Able’s water bottle is able to collapse to half of its size, minimizing that space that it takes up anywhere.


Naming

The name “able” was created after noticing similarities in words that best described the functionality goals of the water bottle.

Sketching

Many sketches and thumbnails were generated to help determine how best to represent able.

Collaboration

Thanks to the collaboration with some insightful product engineers, many ideas were created trying to find innovative functionality options for the water bottle.

Prototyping

Ideas were able to be observed and tested through the process of 3D printing with some plastic materials.

Packaging Prototypes

Once the ideal shape and function of the water bottle was determined, many different prototypes for packaging were generated and tested.

Final Product

The final “able” bottle is not only able to collapse to half of its full size, but also has removable pieces on the top and bottom for easy cleaning.

Components

Certain key aspects of the bottle include the handle, flip-up opening and transparent window for viewing water level.

Functionality

Though only having access to plastic material, the bottle would still be able to successfully collapse and be water-sealable if made with stainless steel. The process is shown in an illustrative diagram.

Insights

Through some user interviews, it was determined that the shape of able reminds users of the classic koozie sleeve. As a result, an interchangeable silicone sleeve may be incorporated with the bottle.

Final Packaging

Final packaging for “able” includes a thick backer card with a peg hole so that the bottle has the option to hang in stores when needed.

User Interaction

It also includes a label in the front to briefly demonstrate how the bottle functions so that users may want to interact with it at point of purchase.
